What Seeds To Plant In March
March always feels like a quiet turning point in the garden.
The edge of summer softens, the light shifts just a little, and you can feel autumn settling in across Australia. The frantic pace of watering and harvesting slows down, and suddenly there’s space to breathe, plan, and plant again.
This is one of my favourite times to sow. The soil is still warm from summer, which gives seeds a lovely head start, but the cooler nights take the pressure off both plants and gardeners. It’s a gentler season. Things establish steadily, without the stress of scorching heat.
If summer felt chaotic in your patch, that’s okay. March is your reset button.
It’s the month to tidy up tired crops, top up beds with compost, and start thinking ahead to those dependable autumn and winter staples. Leafy greens thrive now. Root crops begin to size up beautifully. Herbs settle in happily. And flowers sown this month will reward you later when the garden can feel a little bare.
An afternoon spent sowing in March sets you up for months of harvests to come.
So grab your seed tin, make a cup of tea, and let’s look at what to plant now. 🌿
