Description
Valerian is a graceful wildflower that has been grown and gathered for centuries, carrying with it a sense of old world herbal knowledge, the sort passed down through generations of gardeners, healers, and householders who relied on plants not only for beauty but for daily life.
As a perennial herb, valerian forms a long lasting clump that returns year after year, producing tall, upright stems that can reach around one to one and a half metres in height. These stems rise above a base of lush green foliage, creating a layered look that works beautifully among other perennials. The overall habit is soft rather than rigid, which makes valerian particularly well suited to informal plantings where a natural, slightly wild feel is welcome.
The flowers appear in generous clusters at the tops of the stems, andย they are densely packed and made up of narrow tubular blooms with five delicate petals. Their colouring is usually white, often touched with the faintest blush of pink, especially as the flowers age. Up close, the blooms have a refined, almost lace like quality, while from a distance they create a gentle cloud of colour that lifts the whole planting. The flowers are sweetly scented, releasing a fragrance that is soft and pleasant rather than overpowering, and this scent has been admired for hundreds of years.
Valerian flowers are also excellent for cutting. Their tall stems and clustered blooms make them a natural choice for fresh arrangements, particularly in informal bouquets where a relaxed, garden gathered look is desired. They combine well with other cottage garden favourites and bring both height and fragrance indoors.
It is equally at home in herbal gardens, where it sits alongside other traditional medicinal and culinary plants, and its ability to thrive in both sunny and part shaded positions adds to its adaptability, allowing it to be placed in areas where not every plant is happy to grow.
Beyond its ornamental qualities, valerian has long been grown for its edible and practical uses.ย The roots of valerian are perhaps its most famous feature from a historical and herbal perspective. For centuries, they have been steeped in water to create a tea traditionally associated with relaxation and calm..
