Description

Salvia Tricolor is a striking herbaceous perennial celebrated for its kaleidoscopic foliage that will work well in any garden. This beautiful plant is very easy to grow and features flowers in shades of white, violet-blue and pink.

It thrives in Australia’s diverse climates, from the temperate south to subtropical coastal regions. Its drought tolerance is exceptional once established, making it a solid choice for water-wise gardens or areas prone to dry spells. The plant endures poor soils, flourishing in everything from sandy coastal substrates to well-drained clay-loam, provided it basks in full sun. While it tolerates light frost, it fares best in regions where winters are mild.

In garden design, Salvia Tricolor is a versatile addition with its mounding habit and variegated leaves providing year-round structure to herb gardens, where it mingles effortlessly with silver-toned lavenders or the bold greens of rosemary. In ornamental borders, it acts as a living accent, its variegation softening the starkness of sculptural succulents or amplifying the vibrancy of flowering perennials like gaillardias or coreopsis. Container gardeners prize it for adding vertical interest to patio arrangements, where its foliage contrasts strikingly against trailing plants like ivy-leaved pelargoniums.

Beyond aesthetics, this salvia contributes quietly to garden ecology. Bees and butterflies frequent its blooms, while the aromatic foliage appears to deter browsing by wildlife, a boon for rural gardeners. Its compact size and slow spread make it a considerate neighbour, unlikely to outcompete companion plants.
