Description
The Leek Carentan has been grown by generations of gardeners trusting this leek for its vigour, its resilience, and most importantly, its flavour.
This leek is a real trooper in the garden. It grows with vigour, adapting happily to most soil types and forgiving less-than-perfect conditions. It doesnโt mind a bit of rough treatment and will keep pressing on regardless of what the season throws its way. Its biggest strength, though, lies in its resilience against the cold. Itโs an excellent choice for Australian gardeners looking to keep the harvests rolling through the chilly months.
Of course, beauty and resilience wouldnโt mean much if the flavour didnโt measure up, and this is where Carentan truly shines. Itโs a leek that adds depth and richness to dishes without overpowering them. That subtle sweetness is why cooks have been cherishing this variety for generations. It lifts broths, brightens quiches, and adds body to soups and stews in a way that feels both comforting and refined.
Carentan leeks are generous in size, so even one or two pulled for the kitchen can go a long way in a recipe. That sense of abundance is another reason itโs been valued for so long.

Sowing Leeks: Trays vs. Direct Sowing
Leeks are best sown in trays or punnets first, especially in most parts of Australia where temperatures fluctuate or soil may not be finely tilled. Starting in trays gives you better control over spacing later and allows for a good root system to form before transplanting.
Sowing in Trays:
- Start sowing from late summer to early autumn in temperate areas, or late autumn in warmer zones.
- Use a good-quality seed-raising mix.
- Sow seeds 5mm deep, spaced about 1cm apart.
- Keep moist but not soggy, and place somewhere with good light and airflow.
- Germination takes around 10โ14 days at 15โ20ยฐC.
- Seedlings are ready to transplant once theyโre about the thickness of a pencil and 15โ20cm tall (around 8โ10 weeks from sowing).
Direct Sowing (less common):
- Leeks are slow to germinate and not great at competing with weeds, so direct sowing is only recommended in very finely prepared, weed-free beds.
- If direct sowing, sow thinly in drills about 1cm deep and 20โ30cm apart.
- Thin seedlings to 15cm apart when theyโre about 10cm tall.
๐ฑ Is Pre-treatment Required?
No seed pre-treatment is needed for leeks. They have naturally good germination rates if kept moist and warm enough, though soaking seeds in lukewarm water overnight may speed up germination slightly.
๐ Soil & Position
Leeks love rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Think loose, friable soil that lets the stems swell and expand easily.
Soil Tips:
- pH 6.5โ7.0 is ideal.
- Dig in plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
- Leeks are hungry feedersโmix in a balanced organic fertiliser before planting out.
- For longer white stems (โblanchingโ), transplant leeks into 15cm-deep holes and donโt fill them back in immediatelyโjust water in. Soil will gradually fall in, or you can mound them as they grow.
Position:
- Full sun is best, though leeks can tolerate part shade.
- Shelter from strong winds will help prevent seedling damage.
๐ฟ Care & Maintenance
Once in the ground, leeks are quite easy-going.
- Watering: Keep consistently moist, especially in dry weather. Avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Side-dress with compost or use a liquid fertiliser (like seaweed or fish emulsion) every 3โ4 weeks.
- Weeding: Stay on top of weeds, especially when plants are young.
- Mulching: Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
As leeks grow, gently mound soil up around the stems to blanch them (keep them white and tender). Do this gradually and avoid burying the leaves completely.
๐ผ Companion Planting Guide
Leeks are lovely team players in the veggie patch and can help deter pests with their strong scent.
Good Companions:
- Carrots: They repel each otherโs pestsโgreat combo!
- Celery, onions, beets, brassicas (like cabbage or broccoli): All get along well.
- Strawberries: Leeks may help repel aphids.
Avoid Planting With:
- Legumes (peas, beans): These donโt enjoy the company of alliums like leeks.
- Garlic or onions: Theyโre in the same family and can compete for nutrients and attract similar pests.
โ๏ธ Harvesting
Leeks are ready to harvest around 16โ20 weeks from transplanting (or 24โ30 weeks from seed, depending on conditions and variety).
- You can harvest baby leeks when theyโre finger-thick or leave them to mature to full size.
- Use a fork to gently loosen the soil and lift the leek without breaking it.
- You can harvest gradually as neededโleeks store well in the ground through winter.
๐ Common Issues & Fixes
| Issue | Symptoms | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poor germination | Few or no seedlings appear | Cold temps, dry soil, old seed | Use fresh seed, maintain warmth & moisture |
| Yellowing leaves | Discoloured, slow growth | Nitrogen deficiency | Feed with seaweed or compost tea |
| Thrips | Silvery streaks, twisted growth | Tiny sap-sucking insects | Spray with neem oil or pyrethrum |
| Rust (fungal) | Orange pustules on leaves | Damp, crowded conditions | Improve air flow, remove affected leaves, use organic fungicide |
| Leek moth (rare in AU) | Rolled or mined leaves | Caterpillars inside leaves | Remove affected plants, encourage beneficial insects |
๐พ Seed Saving Guide
Leeks are biennial, meaning they flower in their second yearโso youโll need to overwinter a few healthy plants to save seed.
- Choose the best specimens: Look for true-to-type plants with strong, straight stems and good flavour. Avoid early bolters.
- Leave them in the ground over winter (or transplant to a less-used part of the garden if space is tight).
- In spring, theyโll send up a tall flower stalk with a globe-like umbel of tiny white flowers.
- Pollination is usually by insectsโplant several leeks (10โ20 ideally) to maintain genetic diversity.
- Wait until the seed heads dry on the plant. Cut and place them in a paper bag to finish drying.
- Rub the seed heads to release the black, angular seeds, then clean and store in a cool, dry place.
- Label with variety and year. Leek seeds stay viable for 1โ2 years with good storage.
๐ฑ Final Thoughts
Leeks might not be the flashiest veggie in the patch, but theyโre dependable, versatile, and quietly satisfying to grow. Starting from seed does take a little patience up frontโbut itโs worth it for the long harvest window and rich, homegrown flavour. Plus, with a bit of care early on, they practically look after themselves through winter.
So if youโve never grown leeks from seed before, donโt worryโtheyโre beginner-friendly with a touch of persistence, and theyโll reward you with lush greenery and creamy, mellow stems for soups, pies, and roasts all season long.
