Lettuce leaf basil is a popular Italian variety with large, crinkled leaves, that grow on a short, wide plant. It’s leaves grow to around 10 cm long and the plant is slower to flower, than regular basil, so the harvest period is longer. The leaves hold their flavour well in hot conditions. In late summer small white flowers are produced which are edible.

The leaves are sweet, but not as strong as other basil’s. This makes them particularly suitable for tossing into salads, wrapping fish and chicken or making a rice stuffing. Excellent for using in pesto as due to its lighter green colour it can offer a different choice to the traditional dark green sweet basil. It is one of the best basils for freezing and the leaves really come into their own on pizzas and in sandwiches.
